Assignment One: Film Analysis

Unit 26: Film Studies Assignment: Film Analysis (Talking Head)

In this assignment I am going to be talking about my film of my choice, The Hunger Games that was directed by Francis Lawrence. It is a Sci-Fi that is set in the future where food is a struggle to get.. The Hunger Games is a trilogy of 3 books. The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay. The company that made The Hunger Games is 'Lions Gate Entertainment. Lions Gate was founded on July 3 1997 in Santina Monica, California. It is an American company. The stars that feature in the the movie and make it so much popularity are Jennifer Lawrence who plays the role of Katniss Everdeen because at the start of The Hunger Games Catching Fire, she is with her best friend Liam Hemsworth who plays the role of Gale Hawthorne just thinking about what happen last year at the Hunger Games when she was 1 of 2 that won. The thing that makes it more popular about her winning is that she volunteered to participate in the games instead of her little sister. Another way that these stars make it more popular is that Josh Hutcherson who plays the role of Peeta Market was the the other half of winning the games last year and the thing that shocked most people is that he said that in the centre of movie he announced that he and Katniss are going to be parents. The reason they said this is because they thought they would have canceled the next coming Hunger games but it didn't work out the way they planned it. Woody Harrelson who plays the role Haymitch Abernathy is their mentor that helps both Katniss and Peeta train and get through things without being worried. Sam Claflin who plays the role of Finnick Odair was a new star that came into the Hunger Games trilogy in the Catching Fire.

Opening Scene

In this opening clip of the Hunger Games Catching Fire, the establishing shot shows the mid shot back view of people dressed a gray costumes walking away from the camera as if they're going towards something important

Ending Scene

Todorov (Story and Plot)

In the ending scene of the film The Hunger Games Catching Fire the movie katniss finds out that she's been set up by the president of the hunger games due to a misunderstanding of what happen last year in the hunger games where 2 people from different districts won when there was only suppose to be one. Also in the film with

Propp (Characters)

In the last scene, Haymitch who's is the mentor of the 2 people who won from last year, Beetee who was nominated to compete at the hunger games for a second time and Finnick who won his first Hunger Games when he was 14-years-old.

Levi-Strauss (Opposite) In the last scene it's like survival vs death just because there can only be a few survivors and the rest of them dead.

Barthes (Puzzles and Action)

In the last scene it shows that this time in The Hunger Games, no one wins and it was just a set up due to katniss being the strongest person out of all the districts and also as she's having a baby. This suggests that if they made her die then no one would be watching the Hunger Games in the districts.

SETTINGS

The settings of the movie Hunger Games in this scene set in O'hau, Hawaii USA. The reason why they used this scene in this location is because there's isn't no other place but Hawaii USA where the water flows in such a good rhythm. The shot that they took in this scene is an establishing long shot. The reason why it's an establishing long shot is because it shows all the contenders from all different kinds of districts that are about to start their journey of helping and surviving.

Lighting and Colour
This is a shot of a low angle shot where Katniss wakes up and figures out something in her head goes to try it out. This is one of my favourite scenes just because she cleverly uses her head and finds out that they are stuck in a force field and there is no way out. As she gets up, she grabs her arrows and thrives at the sky and discovers a lighting in the sky which suggests that there's something mysterious going on at the event of the Hunger Games. The use of lighting and colour enhances meanings. For example when you see a colour or lighting, your eyes are attracted to the high contract which will therefore who ever see's it will derive a meaning of something that stands out.

Costume

In this image has been shot as a Medium Shot. In this scene you can see that one of the contenders are wearing the same clothing as the rest of the contenders in the film. This shows how serious they take their games and how organised they are. This costume also helps your healths conditions. For example, your skin could easily be contaminated at this Hunger Games event. This won't 100% help you out but it will slowly get to you as it originally would without wearing the Hunger Games costumes for contenders.

This is given to every surviving contender after 12 hours

This is the only knife that is used in the Hunger Games to be used to kill the contenders.

This gun isn't allowed in the Hunger Games field. The only people that are authorised to use these guns are the guards.

The effect that these three props could have on the audience is that they could think it would be real because it's designed to look realistic for the professionalism that the film produces. For example they've made the little hang pistol gun look so real as the material of the gun is metal and most real guns are designed to be heavy and metal.

CLOSE UP

Face Expression

In this image it shows that Katniss is worried, disgusted and terrified about the situation of her almost getting kicked but luckily she ducks and the axe just misses her by a tiny inch. This shot is also used as an extreme close up. This in fact is a really good scene because she realises everyone isn't just targeting her.

                                                                  MID SHOT

In this scene is shows that the commander of the guards is whipping Katniss's best friend in the back for disrupting an evasion that the guards planned and therefore was punished for what he did. This lead his back to be covered in blood. You can also see some blood that was splashed on this his cheek and forehead.

The scene where Gale gets whipped

This is a good medium and over the shoulder shot as it shows the main 3 characters focusses on and the background blurred out to show the audience that we need to keep our eyes on the 3 characters in the Hunger Games in this scene.

The music in this scene is just silence which causes there to be a good moment in this scene and the way the camera is in the rule of 3rd to just show there heads due to the girl being naked.

In this trailer, the first 10 to 15 seconds of it, there is editing effects where clips in a faded in to show the movie is serious and tease worthy enough for when the movie officially comes out. Another thing in this trailer, is the sound effect where the clip will just disappear and the will be a boom sound effect.

                                    OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT

This is an important shot as it captures both of the actors facial expression while using the use of a single camera production. In the first image is shows 'Primrose' crying because she thinks that she's going to be killed. However, in the other picture, 'Katniss' has a straight face and is trying to calm her little sister down. This is a good use because it gives the audience a better understanding by looking at the one person for a certain amount of time to realise the full description.
